| Abstract: | Presents results of whole-rock geochemical analyses and K-Ar age determination of basalts from axial seamount in Drake Passage. Younger ages towards crest of seamount indicate growth of submarine volcano by central eruptions; composition of trace and rare earth elements indicates formation by hotspot activity rather than seafloor spreading. Transitional alkaline- and subalkaline-series seamount basalts contain small amounts of normative quartz and olivine. Volcanic activity stopped when basaltic magma reached mild alkaline composition. |
