Abstract: Analytical summary of 17 selected papers presented at first Palaeo-Ice Stream International Symposium and printed in this special issue. Authors seek to identify palaeo-ice stream tracks, elucidate controls on ice-stream activation and functioning, assess mass balance effects on ice-sheet dynamics and retreat, and influence of climate change. Research comes in diverse forms, over wide geographic spread, finding sedimentary imprint, glacial deposition and what causes an ice stream to cease fast flow. More palaeo-ice streams should be found and documented, providing further work for Quaternary scientists as fortunately they are exposed rather than under contemporary ice sheets.
