Abstract: Demonstrates uses of rapid imagery from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument in assessing conditions of September 2002 huge rock/ice avalanche at Kolka-Karmadon, North Ossetian Caucasus, Russia and development in spring 2002 of glacier lake on Belvedere glacier, Italian alps. Outlines consequences of potential glacier and permafrost related hazards, perhaps caused through global warming.
