Abstract: Traces development of parameterization of albedo of snow/ice surfaces, including theory of scattering by each snow grain and multiple scattering by snow layers. Improved algorithms help in bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) for solar radiation and studying irregular shape of snow grains. Spectral albedo contains dominant factors of grain size, impurities, snow depth and solar zenith. Heat budgets and snow cover are monitored by method using dependent variables as these can be quantified in the field.
