Abstract: Reports on FASTDRILL Workshop held 6-10 October 2002 at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Multidisciplinary approach seeks to advance various science disciplines through fast-access ice sheet drilling. Technological parameters through FASTDRILL should include ease of use, speed and mobility so that several deep boreholes (1-4 km) could be accomplished in a season along a transect up to hundreds of kilometres long. Geophysical borehole logging and observatories are important, and directional drilling is needed. Types of drilling methods were considered, with coiled-tube drilling (CTD) appearing to offer best match for criteria. Feasibility studies continue in response to expectation of gain of considerable specialised knowledge.
