Abstract: In 3370 km² study area in northern Finland spatial distribution of thermokarst ponds resulting from thawing of palsas was demonstrated using GIS techniques and multivariate spatial modelling. Former distribution of palsas was about three times larger than at present, indicating that the formation and thawing of permafrost are not in balance. Warmer temperatures and more rain would increase thermokarst development from palsas considerably.
