Translated title: Continuity and change in a Laestadian congregation.
Author(s): Eggen, Øyvind.
Date: 2000.
Publisher: Tromsø, Norway: UiT

In: Vekkelse og vitenskap. Lars Levi Laestadius 200 år. (2000.),
Abstract: Describes service in old church in Skibotn, Lyngen - singing style slow and intense, varying in voice balance and volume. Many hundreds fill church, helped by modern electronic sonics. Preacher is unlettered and emphasises his unworthiness, though called by God and congregation to this office. Theme is traditional, orthodox Lutheran-Laestadian with emphasis on Christian conduct in end-time. Saami interpreter serves few dozen in kofte and others not distinguishable, but majority, following 1848 revival, are Norwegian. In fact, two congregations kept same name after split in 1992 between "liberals" and "fundamentalists" (these). Laestadianism is by far largest popular movement in North Norway; labour and ethnic ones do not compare. Article is based on field work, oral and written sources. Movement has become institutionised, with change in emphasis from "heart's belief" to "true doctrine". Discussion follows themes of symbol and ritual and their interpretation by congregations.
