Abstract: Report on an international workshop held at the Canadian Polar Commission, Ottawa, Ontario, March 17-18, 2001, with 17 participants. Following drilling of 3.6 km deep hole in East Antarctic ice sheet at Vostok Station, discovery of Lake Vostok and reports of live microbes in deep Vostok ice core, with over 70 other subglacial lakes identified, examines possibilities for multidisciplinary investigation as well as specialised research. Public interest affects funding possibilities within Canada. Seeks to identify national and international interests and how Canadian expertise may be employed and advanced in this important field.
