Abstract: Describes Tromsø hospital in local setting as well as against European history of hospitals. 1922 version was third. Earlier version was for incurables with "radesyke" disease (nature unclear) and later as poorhouse. Proper hospital was set up in 1854, with own doctor 1855. Big changes in treatment followed developments in surgery, anaesthesia and antisepsis. With latter, survival was more likely than not, even in hospital. Artificial lighting helped.
