Record #163453:

Tysfjord inntil 1780 - jord og rettigheter / Ragnar Nielssen.

Title: Tysfjord inntil 1780 - jord og rettigheter / Ragnar Nielssen.
Translated title: Tysfjord up to 1780 - earth and rights.
Author(s): Nielssen, Ragnar.
Date: 2003.
Language: Norwegian.
In: Tromsø Museums Skrifter. (2003.), XXX (2003)
Abstract: One of Saami's main places, since time immemorial, and with greatest population. From 1800s Sea Saami were norwegianised, but with new blend of Lule Saami. When Troms was examined in 1980s, Tysfjord / Divttasvuotna was omitted, despite plentiful material, which is here described. Hunting used to include small whales, seal, otter, bear and reindeer, with skins traded in late Middle Ages to birkarls and Karelians. Siidas were probably source of boat crews for Lofot fisheries, with dried cod going via Norwegian traders. Land was siida range, taxed by Government and Sweden. Any farms set up in 1700s were in special Saami status - finne- rydninger, jorder or odel. Most of chapter describes legal developments, including status of Norwegian immigrants.
