Record #163429:

NOR: s nordiska forskningskonferens / Katarina Hällgren.

Title: NOR: s nordiska forskningskonferens / Katarina Hällgren.
Translated title: NOR's Nordic research conference.
Author(s): Hällgren, Katarina.
Date: 2002.
Language: Swedish.
In: Samefolket. (2002.), Vol. 83(4) (2002)
Abstract: Nordiskt (includes Greenland) Organ för Renforskning was set up in 1980. Bror Saitton, Sameting member, described changes in winter grazing since 1960s, as lichen no longer gets chance to regrow. Prof Vavra, Oregon, described current questions about extensive stocking on natural grazing, which can foster both ecological and economic sustainability. Examples are Tibetan highlands and region between Rockies and Coast Ranges in North America. Sustainability and over-grazing both need clarification of "grazing quality" (Jan Riseth, Tromsø). Even question "do reindeer eat lichen?" can be raised! In Russia it is not certain. Where it is eaten, it certainly takes 15-20 years to regrow. Reindeer are "selective generalists". Effects on summer and winter grazing and growth were explained, but gulf between herders' questions and scientists' answers remained.
