Abstract: Schefferus has first recorded joik, but serious quantities of Saami writings start with "Lappisk eventyr og sagn" 1927-29. After that come Turi's work, then those of Labba, Ranta-Rönnlund, Idivuoma and increasing rate of production. Themes were varied, but political tone was evident in many, and herding was only one setting, e.g. tourism appeared in due course.
