Abstract: Tacitus described their simple life and needs with admiration. Much water has since flowed in Tiber, more in Lapland, but their distinctiveness has always attracted notice, probably most of any people in proportion to their numbers. Author found 20 000 records in 1980, now perhaps 40 000. He has stencilled "www" bibliography. Next after Tacitus was Procopius with skrithfinnoi. Others mentioned are Adam of Bremen, German text of 1557, Olaus Magnus and Johannes Schefferus's Lapponia. First studies of language were in 18th Cent. when Missions put out variety of works. Article ends with mention of Stockfleth, Fellman and Laestadius brothers.
