Abstract: Uses simulations with coupled ocean-atmosphere-sea ice model to investigate role of wind-driven sea ice motion on ocean ventilation. Comparison of model-simulated concentrations of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) with observations from Weddell Sea, south-eastern Pacific and North Atlantic show that buoyancy fluxes associated with sea ice divergence control sites and rates of deep- and intermediate-water formation in Weddell and Ross Seas. Freshwater fluxes implicitly associated with sea ice export also determine intensity of gyre circulation and rate of downwelling in Weddell Sea. In North Atlantic, increased sea ice export from Arctic weakens and shallows meridional overturning cell, resulting in decreased surface flux of CFCs around 65°.
