Abstract: | Uses output of regional atmospheric climate model to quantify average January and July momentum budget of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over East Antarctic ice sheet and surrounding oceans. In January surface cooling is weak and large-scale pressure gradient force dominates ABL momentum budget. In July under conditions of strong surface cooling shallow katabatic jet develops over gentle slopes of interior ice sheet and strong, deep jet develops over steep coastal slopes. ABL thickens considerably in coastal regions due to piling up of cold air over adjacent sea ice and ice shelves, which represents main opposing force for katabatic winds. Horizontal and vertical advection are generally small. In cross-slope direction momentum budget represents simple balance between surface drag and Coriolis turning. Discusses intra-seasonal variability of large-scale wind field in ABL in relation to strength of polar vortex, background baroclinicity, and topography of ice sheet. Subsidence is found over interior ice sheet and rising motion in coastal zone, reflecting acceleration and deceleration of katabatic circulation. However, vertical velocities are generally small because downslope mass flux in ABL is confined to shallow layer below wind speed maximum. |
