Abstract: 6 sites were studied from August 1999 to July 2000. Ground microclimate on top of very large boulders in boulder field of central valley bottom is comparable to that at alpine ridge 300 m higher, rather than to that at base of boulder. If chemical processes run at temperatures above zero C, sites in valley have favourable conditions for from 139 to 324 days per year. Freeze-thaw is rare here except for annual cycle.
