Record #162832:

Sediment inclusions in Alaskan coastal sea ice: spatial distribution, interannual variability, and entrainment requirements / Aaron P. Stierle, Hajo Eicken.

Title: Sediment inclusions in Alaskan coastal sea ice: spatial distribution, interannual variability, and entrainment requirements / Aaron P. Stierle, Hajo Eicken.
Author(s): Stierle, Aaron P.
Eicken, Hajo.
Date: 2002.
In: Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. (2002.), Vol. 34(4) (2002)
Abstract: Examines frazil ice layer of sea-ice cores for 1998, 1999 and 2000 autumn freeze-up periods and compares them with sediment resuspension model in study of spatial and temporal variability in fast-ice cover of shallow Elson Lagoon, Barrow, Alaska. Little correlation exists between number of aggregates and sediment concentration. Both ranged widely, differing from year to year as did potential for bottom-sediment resuspension. Implies that environmental conditions at autumn freeze-up influence sediment load of sea ice and spatial distribution of sedimentary inclusions in ice cover, so by modelling this, it should be possible to estimate range of natural variability.
