Abstract: Fungi were found in 8 sites, including Surtsey. 11 species were identified directly or using host plant Allium porrum, 6 cultivated in pots on Plantago lanceolata. Root colonisation was estimated on lymegrass (Leymus arenarius), Iceland's main dune-building grass. Work is discussed in relation to occurrence of such species in polar regions and to sand dune reclamation.
