Abstract: Glaciers with total area of 580 km² are found within nine western states of United States. Only Washington, Oregon, California, Montana and Wyoming have glaciers large enough to be discerned by Landsat MSS images, though technique may be used to provide information on past glaciation, glacial geology and seasonal variations in snow cover. Since 1850, area of glaciers in Glacier National Park has diminished by one third.
