Abstract: In beginning of 1941, Finns suspected Russian concentrations on Finnish border. Käkäönen was then serving as military attaché in Moscow and received task of checking accuracy of information. Travel to Karelia and Murmansk was not prohibited, but Soviet defence ministry monitored selling travel tickets to foreigners. By bribery and resourcefulness, disguised as Soviet workman, he finally succeeded with Japanese intelligence officer in reaching Petroskoi / Petrozavodsk. There he was caught. He left again from Moscow, but was again returned. His journeys were exciting and dangerous. He tried by car; once he was in danger of execution. But finally he succeeded in reaching his goal. Account gives interesting picture of affairs on other side of frontier.
