Abstract: Author was born in Russia in 1908, and after time in Switzerland was drawn to North again in 1938 where he settled among Skolt Saami in North Finland. They were suspicious, but when WW2 began Crottet was adopted and they taught him their myths and legends. Many have traces of Asia, from where Skolt Saami themselves originated. No one before Crottet had been able to penetrate these people's reticence. "It is magical world one enters, with wise reindeer and old fish, runes on worn flake, kings and queens and demon with his harem, with mild saints and corrupt priests in Russian Orthodox style, and with men who transform into animal shape and animals that transmogrify into human form".
