Langt hjemmefra - grønlandske børn på skoleophold i Danmark i 1960'erne og 1970'erne / Ernst Jensen.

Title: Langt hjemmefra - grønlandske børn på skoleophold i Danmark i 1960'erne og 1970'erne / Ernst Jensen.
Translated title: Far from home - Greenland children at school in Denmark in 1960s and 1970s.
Author(s): Jensen, Ernst.
Date: 2001.
Publisher: Nuuk :
Language: Danish.
Abstract: Author taught in Greenland from 1959, becoming school inspector in 1966 and consultant from 1985 to 1988. Book is outcome of PhD study of topic. Includes case of children's holiday visits to Denmark, started in 1950s and still continuing. Myth holds that experience was psychologically and socially damaging, with homesickness, family rupture, loss of identity, linguistic and cultural splits and alienation, and post-colonial dominance of Greenlanders. But some tell of rich experiences, close friendships formed with Danish families, widening of horizons and linguistic consequences that opened further education and professions. Author seeks to give complete picture, via questionnaires, interviews and archive meterial, leading to fuller perspective on continuing debate about education and language. Full bibliography.
