Abstract: Biography of Jørgen Olsen of Sisimiut, intelligent, respected and hard-working politician 1916-1985, initiator of Home Rule idea. Father "Smiler" Simon Olsen was poet, catechist, schoolteacher, later fisherman, and preacher, though not seminary-trained. His mother came from family that helped H.J. Rink with his collection of Inuit stories. She died in 1920 from giving birth to fifth child. They were of mixed race, going back on one side to Norwegian Ole Bach from Stavanger. Olsen was given training and first job was as wireless telegraphist at Sisimiut. He taught himself Danish and English. In 1942 he was elected to municipal council, where he rose to chairman. He married Andrea as 28-year old. They had no children, but fostered or adopted 13, and produced local paper "Piniartoq" - The Fisherman. He caught TB and was sent to Denmark, where he almost died during operation. Author met him there. His political style was quick-witted and difficult.
