Record #161818:

Consideration of major issues in ecosystem monitoring and management / I. Everson.

Title: Consideration of major issues in ecosystem monitoring and management / I. Everson.
Author(s): Everson, I.
Date: 2002.
In: CCAMLR Science. (2002.), Vol. 9 (2002)
Abstract: Outlines requirements of ecosystem approach to management of Southern Ocean resources and highlights need for information on harvested and dependent species, their interactions and natural population variations. Large-scale interactions are catered for in Krill Yield Model (KYM), and smaller scale interactions centre around three main categories of availability of krill; variation in vital rates of dependent species; and overlap between commercial fishing and predator foraging. Assesses CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Programme (CEMP) as framework for investigation of krill availability in addition to direct investigation of vital rates. Discusses monitoring of overlap between fishing and predator foraging; and mechanism for bringing various components together as ecosystem approach to management.
