Distribution of mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari) (Channichthyidae) around South Georgia at various stages of its life cycle / Zh.A. Frolinka.

Title: Distribution of mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari) (Channichthyidae) around South Georgia at various stages of its life cycle / Zh.A. Frolinka.
Author(s): Frolinka, Zh. A.
Date: 2002.
In: CCAMLR Science. (2002.), Vol. 9 (2002)
Abstract: Describes spatial-temporal variability of mackerel icefish distribution at different stages of its life cycle, based on analysis of horizontal and vertical distribution data collected during research and commercial cruised from 1970-91. Young fish were found mainly in southern part of study area, immature fish in east and southwest, and adults in north. Fish larvae inhabit upper 100 m layer of pelagic waters; young fish were mainly observed near bottom and at up to 75 m from bottom, undertaking vertical migrations into water column during day and returning to bottom layers at night; immature fish were distributed throughout water column at all times of day but undertook vertical diurnal migrations; mature fish were found near bottom during day and in water column at night. Larger fish did not undertake vertical migrations. Variations in depth distribution of Champsocephalus gunnari relate to both fish length and season.
