Analysis of krill trawling positions north of the South Shetland Islands (Antarctic Peninsula area), 1980/81-1999/2000 / S. Kawaguchi, K. Segawa.

Abstract: | Presents analysis of krill trawling positions from fishing logbooks from 1980-2000, showing intra- and interannual variation, and discusses biological and environmental factors which may have influenced trawling positions. Commercial fishing operations concentrated on outer shelf in early 1980s, along shelf slope in mid to late 1980s, and from shelf across to outer shelf in 1990s. Intra-annually, trawling positions started from outer shelf and proceeded towards shelf later in season, and were primarily governed by distribution of larger mature krill, especially at beginning of fishing season. Biological factors affecting product quality, such as salp abundance and proportion of green krill, had increasing effect on trawling positions, as did ice conditions in more recent fishing periods. |
