Abstract: | Describes Kristen Løken's service as pastor on South Georgia from 1912-14. Quotation gives some flavour: "The work which cannot be directly converted into so many barrels of oil, has for many little value". Natural setting was splendid and reminiscent of Norway, and he was well received by manager and family. He liked his rough flock, though very different in interests, and visit to Prince Olav's Harbour is described, when drunkard caused near havoc at funeral. After funerals, congregation was up for period. Proper church was built before he left Grytviken. Cultural projects, like musical quartet, were liable to be broken up as seamen left island, and had to be continually renewed. His replacement, Frithjof Zwilgmeyer, was good humoured, young and sociable. He stayed from 1914-1916. Another came in 1920s, but after 1931 post ended. |
