Abstract: Article focuses on rural areas showing growth in 1990s and describes locations and socio-democratic characters of populations. Three types were identified: those within daily commuting distance of regional centres; those that have benefited from tourism, mostly mountain villages near Norwegian border; finally some rural areas with attractive residential environments and leisure housing.
