Record #161572:

Effects of simulated browsing and length of growing season on leaf characteristics and flowering in a deciduous Arctic shrub, Salix polaris / Christina Skarpe, René van der Wal.

Title: Effects of simulated browsing and length of growing season on leaf characteristics and flowering in a deciduous Arctic shrub, Salix polaris / Christina Skarpe, René van der Wal.
Author(s): Skarpe, Christina.
Wal, René van der.
Date: 2002.
In: Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. (2002.), Vol. 34(3) (2002)
Abstract: Shrub was studied in Svalbard, where it is normally grazed by reindeer. Plants were chosen from areas with different lengths of growing season. Leaf numbers, total mass, individual mass and number of inflorescences were greatly reduced 1 yr after treatment. Plants seem to respond to summer browsing by compensatory growth rather than chemical defence.
