| Abstract: | Presents results of population census and monitoring work for southern rockhopper and magellanic penguins breeding in Falkland Islands and southern Chile, showing decline in Falkland Island populations but stability in Chile. Discusses effect of commercial fishing for fish and squid around Falklands, and compares diet and foraging behaviour for both regions, showing increase in duration of foraging trips for magellanic penguins breeding in Falklands, and higher breeding success and chick survival in Chile. Evaluates possible effects of increased ecotourism in region, and recent oil spills in Falkland Islands. |
