Lauge Koch and the mapping of north east Greenland: tradition and modernity in Danish Arctic research, 1920-1940 / Christopher Ries.
Title: | Lauge Koch and the mapping of north east Greenland: tradition and modernity in Danish Arctic research, 1920-1940 / Christopher Ries. |
Author(s): | Ries, Christopher. |
Date: | 2002. |
Publisher: | Canton, MA: Science History Publications |
In: | Narrating the Arctic : a cultural history of Nordic scientific practices. (2002.), |
Abstract: | Examines dispute between Koch and eleven prominent Danish geologists. Argues that whilst personalities played a part, so also did transition from explorer to field scientist which coincided with Koch's career. Thus, in 1930s geological specimens collected in Greenland by Koch's scientists were analyzed in Greenland rather than returned to Denmark for study by staff of University of Copenhagen and Mineralogical Museum, several of whose staff joined cabal against Koch. |
