Record #161184:

Arcticality: gender, race, and geography in the writings of Vilhjalmur Stefansson / Gísli Pálsson.

Title: Arcticality: gender, race, and geography in the writings of Vilhjalmur Stefansson / Gísli Pálsson.
Author(s): Pálsson, Gísli.
Date: 2002.
Publisher: Canton, MA: Science History Publications
In: Narrating the Arctic : a cultural history of Nordic scientific practices. (2002.),
Abstract: Author seeks to situate Stefansson's writings in the context of dynamics of a team of explorers, standards of contemporary anthropological practice, power relations of early twentieth-century expeditions, and North American Icelandic community in which he grew up. Suggests that Stefansson's popular works, together with those of certain others, succeeded in establishing the Arctic Zone as a discursive space, analogous to Tropics and Orient.
