Abstract: | Study estimating snow-cover percentages in Finland began in 1999 using NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) satellite images, comparing reflectance conditions. Cloudiness is main handicap. Reduced some problems by estimating percentages for drainage areas rather than pixels and using local comparisons. Results may also be used for hydrological models. Comparison with ground results appeared satisfactory, but further study of problems in melting season needed. Operational use of method began in 2000. |
