Abstract: Author was herself in exile at Vorkuta 17 years. Camp was based on coal mining, but scientific work went on there too in geology, mineralogy, permafrost and building design. Intellectual activity among prisoners comprised letters and lectures and amateur theatre - all other was banned, and punished severely. 13 highly educated prisoners are listed, with their specialities. Despite rules, letters did get out and even into other camps. Baskov was electrical engineer. Accused of spying for Germany, he was first employed professionally, but soon moved to labour. Atmosphere of high endeavour formed around him. After release in 1954, he continued to work at Vorkuta and wife joined him. Last section of article describes Baskov's views on major literary figures and their attitudes.
