| Abstract: | Investigates summer and winter trends in sulfate level since 1925 from a Col du Dôme (CDD) ice core (French Alps). Summer concentrations, enhancing by factor of 10, reached highest level of 860 n g⁻¹ in 1980, subsequently decreasing by quarter in 1990s. These mirror emissions from sources within 700-1000 km. Winter levels were significantly lower, enhanced by factor of 4, as air masses are not transported upwards to such an extent. Contrasts these European findings to those from Greenland. Possible to reconstruct present and past atmospheric sulfate concentrations at 4300 m above sea level over Europe in summer and winter, helping evaluate role of sulfate aerosol in forcing European climate. |
