Abstract: Describes classic shamanism, as found in northern hemisphere in Greenland, Siberia, Mongolia, Lapland and Arctic North America, based on selection of texts especially by Danish missionaries, scientists and explorers. Main emphasis is on Greenland angakkoq. These, found under exacting conditions, are compared with modern neo-shamanism, or "core shamanism", mainly indulged in West, and New Age practices, seen as distinct. Greenland chapter covers seances, apprenticeship, spirits, magic objects, nature, healing, witchcraft (seen as purely evil), death, end of angakkoq, traditional accounts and Eastern variants.
