Record #160781:

Characteristics of surge-type glaciers / Hester Jiskoot.

Title: Characteristics of surge-type glaciers / Hester Jiskoot.
Author(s): Jiskoot, Hester.
Date: 1999.
Abstract: Aims to produce method for testing and validating theories on mechanisms of glacier surging through isolation of environmental and glacier-related factors that lead to distribution of surge-type glaciers. Identifies characteristics of surge-type and non-surge-type glaciers, allowing prediction of type, and also finding classes of surge-type glaciers and surge behaviour. Uses multivariate logit regression model for 1726 glaciers in Yukon that indicates long glaciers at higher elevations are most likely to be of surge type. For 504 glaciers in Svalbard many variables of influence were found. Optimal multivariate model parameter estimates indicate long glaciers with steeper slopes, over fine sediment lithologies younger than 360\h Ma, are most likely to be surge-type. Analyses surge history and behaviour of Sortebrae, East Greenland, and compares this to other regions, using multi-model photogrammetry for detailed study. Resembles pattern of Svalbard more than other regions. Restricted outflow is important factor in controlling surging.
