Record #160769:

The influence of glacigenic sedimentation on slope-apron development on the continental margin off northwest Britain / M.S. Stoker.

Title: The influence of glacigenic sedimentation on slope-apron development on the continental margin off northwest Britain / M.S. Stoker.
Author(s): Stoker, M. S.
Date: 1995.
Publisher: London: Geological Society London
In: Tectonics, sedimentation and palaeoceanography of the North Atlantic region. (1995.),
Abstract: Reviews glacigenic slope sedimentation off north-west Scotland, and compares it with that off other North Atlantic margins. During Pleistocene grounded ice reached shelf edge of Hebrides and west Shetland, depositing large amounts of sediment on to adjacent slopes. Deposition on Sula Sgeir Fan is discrete and thick (200 m), contrasting with thinner "between fan" sediments. West Shetland slope shows wedges of sediment forming thinner succession of deposits. These deposits can be traced to specific episodes. Traces deposits on high continental margins of East Greenland, Barents Sea and eastern Canada that demonstrate differences in nature and style of slope sedimentation, and importance of glacigenic processes to late Cenozoic slope-apron development in North Atlantic region. Points to significance of local and regional geological controls, and indication of climatic control of slope evolution in front of continental ice sheets.
