Record #160411:

Jounin matkassa / Ahti Koskinen.

Title: Jounin matkassa / Ahti Koskinen.
Translated title: Travels with Jouni. Stories from the Finnish Lapland.
Author(s): Koskinen, Ahti.
Date: 1997.
Publisher: Author
Language: Finnish and English.
Abstract: Free translation, pictures not repeated. Author describes many visits to, and conversations with, J. Magga of Kuttura, called after ancestor Guttorm. Family life of herding Saami in village beyond road's end is built up, with change to snow mobiles and from domestic deer, except in parts where they are kept to entertain tourists. Harsh memories from WWII emerge from time to time, but eventually Jouni is persuaded to cross over border and visit Ladoga. Discussions include effects of tourism, and need to keep village innocence, perhaps by passing road at distance from village. Further roads will also deter reindeer.
