Abstract: | Takes up history of base, 25 years after first theme number of Grønland. Reasons for base are repeated, maps and plans shown, Danish liaison and scientific officers, including author 1967-1998, listed, Camp Tuto ice tunnel, work on Inland Ice, nuclear reactor at Camp Century, Geopole Station, BMEWS, B52 crash with hydrogen bombs aboard and Project "Iceworm" described. Monthly mean temperatures 1990-1999 are tabulated. Move of Greenlanders to Qaanaaq and life there are described. Danish involvement in base is noted. New roles after end of Soviet Union include that as space control centre. Home Rule plans and hopes are noted. Author concludes with hope of involvement of Thule people in national life and Arctic ecology. |
