Record #159927:

Gjess på Svalbard / Fridtjof Mehlum.

Title: Gjess på Svalbard / Fridtjof Mehlum.
Translated title: Geese on Svalbard.
Author(s): Mehlum, Fridtjof.
Date: 2002.
Language: Norwegian.
In: Ottar. (2002.), Vol. 1 (2002)
Abstract: First record is of Barentsz in 1596. Brents, barnacles and pink-footeds spend three hectic summer months here with good nesting conditions. Numbers dropped during first half of 20th Cent., but National Parks and reserves along coast restored numbers. Barnacles are subject to fox predation, so choose islands after ice has gone, or steep mountains, for hatching. Brents are similar. Pink-footeds form small colonies or nest alone, commonly on mountains with good outlook. Feeding, on plants, starts on south facing slopes. Whole nesting process is speeded up compared with southerly stocks.
