| Abstract: | Considers using changes in dispersion of ocean waves as they penetrate pancake ice to link into finding thickness of ice. Describes analysis technique for retrieving wave spectrum from SAR spectrum, and discusses cross-spectral technique and other wave theories. Experiments in Odden ice tongue, 1993 and 1997, gave surface truth measurements. Reports imagery from ice-edge of Weddell Sea, July 1997. Basic theory, when developed further, may prove SAR as useful tool in study of frazil-pancake sea-ice cover, especially at times when surface observations are difficult. Radarsat in image mode will promote this facility. |
