Record #159644:

Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) and climate change: Importance of winter forage / Thrine Moen Heggberget, Eldar Gaare, John P. Ball.

Title: Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) and climate change: Importance of winter forage / Thrine Moen Heggberget, Eldar Gaare, John P. Ball.
Author(s): Heggberget, Thrine Moen.
Gaare, Eldar.
Ball, John P.
Date: 2002.
In: Rangifer. (2002.), Vol. 22(1) (2002)
Abstract: Change is expected to be particularly pronounced in Arctic areas. Authors review winter foraging conditions, including snow effects. Wild South Norwegian deer are finally considered. Energy rich lichens often dominate diet, and are preferred. Some populations, however, have larger gut, better adapted for non-lichen diet, including shrubs or some grasses, which may supply necessary minerals. Climate change may push lichen belts higher, to dry, windy ridges, which are easily over-grazed.
