Productivity factors of the Finnish semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer t. tarandus) stock during the 1990s / Jouko Kumpula, Alfred Colpaert, Mauri Nieminen.

Title: Productivity factors of the Finnish semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer t. tarandus) stock during the 1990s / Jouko Kumpula, Alfred Colpaert, Mauri Nieminen.

In: Rangifer. (2002.), Vol. 22(1) (2002)
Abstract: Intensive grazing and increased use of land for other purposes have caused decline in amount of arboreal (Alectoria, Bryoria spp.) and reindeer (Cladina spp.) lichens in Finnish management area. Supplementary feeding has increasingly compensated for lack of natural fodder. Its amount, and nature of summer pasture should therefore have increasing effect on stock productivity. Authors found that productivity was dependent especially on two elements: amount of feeding and stock density on summer pasture. So summer pastures may become limiting factor on productivity.
