Abstract: | Reconsiders contribution of Baltic-German scientist best known as founder of modern embryology. Baer led expeditions to Novaya Zemlya in 1837 and to Kola Peninsula in 1840. He may also be regarded as founder of geocryology, writing first theoretical survey on Siberian permafrost, and initiating and organizing expedition of Alexander von Middendorff to conduct field studies of permafrost. |
