Title: Screening Antarctica: Britain, the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, and Scott of the Antarctic / Klaus Dodds.
Author(s): Dodds, Klaus.
Dodds, Klaus-John.
Date: 2002.
In: Polar Record. (2002.), Vol. 38(204) (2002)
Abstract: Appraises 1948 feature film Scott of the Antarctic in light of contemporary political tensions and aspirations, especially from adjacent Argentina and Chile. Demonstrates need to show British polar world to wider audiences particularly since American expeditions were much better funded than Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, which had been created to protect British sovereignty claims in Antarctic Peninsula region. Film was made with cooperation of Colonial Office and Scott Polar Research Institute. Subsequent Antarctic Treaty of 1959 protected imperial polar claims.
