Record #159265:

AEldre og nyere tids fødselhjaelp i Grønland / A. Bertelsen.

Title: AEldre og nyere tids fødselhjaelp i Grønland / A. Bertelsen.
Translated title: Former and more recent obstetric help in Greenland.
Author(s): Bertelsen, A.
Date: 2001.
Language: Danish.
In: Grønland. (2001.), Vol. 8 (2001)
Abstract: Reprint in modern spelling of article in "Tidskrift for Jordemødre", 1911. Gruesome "aids" of bits of seal were used, not necessarily to benefit of mother or child. In 1820 steps were taken to set up paid midwife service and some training for it. In 1845 it was suggested that some be sent to Denmark for instruction, but language difficulties persisted even in 1905. North Greenlanders were better supplied with (old) scissors than southerners in 1902, but by time of article sets of instruments were available. Footnote: Health Directorate resolved to set up peripatetic midwife service in 2002 to serve all pregnant women. There are too few midwives, and those in service are sceptical whether plan will work without better pay and working conditions.
