Record #159263:
Roterende slibesten. En upåagtet nordbofund fra Østerbygden / Steffen Stummann Hansen, John Sheehan.
Title: | Roterende slibesten. En upåagtet nordbofund fra Østerbygden / Steffen Stummann Hansen, John Sheehan. |
Translated title: | Rotating grindstone. An unnoticed Norse find from the Eastern Settlement. |
Author(s): | Hansen, Steffen Stummann. Sheehan, John. |
Date: | 2001. |
Language: | Danish. |
In: | Grønland. (2001.), Vol. 8 (2001) |
Abstract: | Describes find on stone pile at Elvgård, first mentioned in 1934. It is disc shaped, polished sandstone. Similar object from Igaliku Kujalleq has circular hole in centre and is of soapstone, so could never have been grindstone, while another sandstone example could not be rotated. Sites of all these were in large settlements, so their use was almost certainly "industrial" rather than as farmer's tools. Similar tools from Viking times are found at Whithorn, SW Scotland. |
Notes: | Grønland. Vol. 8 :289-292 (2001). |
Keywords: | 621.9 -- Tools. 903 -- Archaeology: Norse. U -- Archaeology. (*3) -- Arctic regions. (*38) -- Greenland. |
