Abstract: Is it good or bad for Saami? How is Saami identity affected by commercial tourism? Can it be combined with herding? These were discussed at Jukkasjärvi over some days by Saami tourist firms, politicians, researchers and journalists. There are now c. 40 different firms in Swedish Lapland. One guide cannot stomach shooting ptarmigan in August. Another noted that mountain walkers were not interested at all in people and their culture. Another remarked that all tourism builds on some myth of sorts.
