Record #158801:

Special section: Mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet (PARCA) / Anon.

Title: Special section: Mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet (PARCA) / Anon.
Date: 2001.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (2001.), Vol. 106(D24) (2001)
Abstract: Presents major results from Program for Arctic Regional Climate Assessment (PARCA) from its start in 1995 to 2001 in 28 papers. Gives first accurate assessment of mass balance of a polar ice sheet, showing that higher regions of this ice sheet remain in balance, though with local variations related to differing snow accumulation rates. In contrast, coastal thinning during 1990s raised global sea level. Comparing late 1990s with 1950s, warming of coastal regions was up by 2° though discharge velocities must have increased too to account for this. Satellite-borne observations include synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data giving measurements of ice velocity and positions of glacier grounding lines. Focus has now altered to coastal regions, considering ablation, summer warming, albedo feedback and glaciers undergoing.
Notes:

Journal of Geophysical Research. Vol. 106(D24) :33, 689-34, 058 (2001).

Entire issue was reprinted in 2002, and PARCA special section produced as book by American Geophysical Union.
